Periodontitis is an infection which can lead to tooth loss by destruction of the tissues which hold the teeth in place.
Signs and symptoms of periodontal disease include:
- a bad taste in your mouth
- bad breath
- gums that bleed when brushing of flossing
- red or swollen tender gums
- loose teeth and spaces developing between your teeth are also signs
Periodontal disease is caused by build up of bacterial dental plaque. This is a soft colourless film of bacteria which forms on the tooth. It can be controlled by good oral hygiene – tooth brushing and cleaning between the teeth.
There are a number of types of periodontal disease and they all affect the tissues supporting the teeth. As the disease gets worse the bone anchoring the teeth in the jaw is lost making the teeth loose. If this is not treated, the teeth may eventually fall out.
